Outline

This web site attempts to provide a brief but informative guide to why and how flotation is used, and how it benefits archaeobotany and archaeology in general. Below is an outline of what is included.

  1. Background - this is a simple summary of the theory behind flotation, and how it is used in archaeology to reconstruct agricultural activities and diet.

  2. Following on, the decisions involved, and justification for these standards are provided.

  3. The process of flotation is then explained, with steps guiding the reader though it.

  4. Finally, a brief case study of the site of al Mudaybic in Jordan is provided, to try and put the whole process in perspective. References and web sites are included to allow further study on archaeobotany, plus a more in-depth look at other sites.
